Information for Your First Class
1. You'll need a leash and collar; here's what we recommend:
- Collar - anything except a harness, a haltie or other such 'gentle leader' type of apparatus.
- Leash - anything but a chain or extend-a-leash.
2. Bring your dog in a hungry state. That means no meals before class and no snacks the day of class. If you feed both morning and night, miss the AM meal and feed the dog its normal meal after class.
3. Food Rewards - We will supply these the first night, and you should bring meat or cheese treats for subsequent classes. Grapes, Cheerios, carrots, regular dog kibble and biscuit bits will not encourage the dog to learn as well as it might, whereas wieners, sausage, steak or roast trimmings, that is, real meat or cheese will.
4. We have cleanup materials available. Thanks in advance for using them to keep the approaches to the building or field clean . Your dog won't be the only one to 'go' inside! Try to get a moment or two to give your dog a chance to 'go' before coming in - but mistakes will happen just the same.
5. If your dog is overly aggressive with other dogs or with people, you'll need to book a one on one consult with Barry to get the problem straightened out before class onever. If it is just somewhat out of control, or if you're worried about being able to handle the dog on its first introduction to a large group of people and dogs, then leave it in the car and come inside and ask for Barry to help you bring the dog in. He will show you how to manage it correctly or correct minor aggressive behaviour immediately.
